Our Story

We built this café because mornings deserve more than rushing.

Matinal began with a simple observation — that the best part of any day was the hour before it properly started. Before the emails, before the appointments, before the noise. That quiet window where coffee meant something.

Sofia Hartmann spent eleven years in boutique hospitality across Copenhagen and Paris before settling in Abu Dhabi. She found a city full of remarkable people who moved too fast. Matinal is her answer to that.

Everything here is chosen for the same reason: because it makes the morning better. Our coffee is roasted locally by a single-origin roaster we've known for years. Our pastries are made before sunrise. Our ingredients come from farms with names we can actually remember.

The Atmosphere

This is what it feels like to arrive early.

The light through the east-facing windows does something beautiful between 8 and 10am. It falls across the oak tables at an angle that makes the whole room feel warm. The music is low enough that you can hear the conversation at the next table if you want to — or ignore it entirely if you don't.

The scent that greets you at the door isn't manufactured or diffused. It's coffee being ground and bread being pulled from the oven. Things that are actually happening, not performed for your benefit.

We've thought about every detail — the chairs, the tables, the cups (hand-thrown ceramic, never uniform, always beautiful in their imperfection). Matinal isn't a destination. It's a ritual you didn't know you were missing.

  • — Morning light from 8am to noon
  • — Natural materials: oak, linen, hand-thrown ceramic
  • — Music chosen for calm and focus
  • — Private booths and communal neighbourhood tables
  • — Wi-Fi available — we won't rush you
